It’s reassuring to think that slavery ended with good ole Abe Lincoln, but sadly it’s not true.
Best estimates are that there are 27 million people in modern slavery. It’s happening every day, even in Australia; many are forced to sleep and eat in the place they work, are paid very little, or worse not paid at all. They may be threatened, physically or psychologically abused and have no control over their passport or valuables.
We’ll learn what trafficking, forced labour and forced marriage are and what these situations look like in Australia. We’ll get a better understanding of who ends up in these conditions, how they get there and why they stay. Finally, we’ll discuss what we can do to help.
Beau loves 21st century design, architecture and pugs. She studied law and works in outreach and fundraising at Anti-Slavery Australia. She spends a lot of time talking to students and professionals around greater Sydney about issues of trafficking and modern day slavery.
