This class is an introduction to the Hero’s Journey, which has been the template for storytelling since time began. We trace that journey through myth, legend, classic literature and fantasy fiction, identifying archetypes and the roles in creating narrative. If you are planning on writing a story for adults, teens or children the hero’s journey is a must!
Looking at the roles of the Hero, the Shadow, the Mentor, the Quest, Threshold Guardians, the Common and the Special World we explore how to utilize these elements in story creation for both realist and fantasy fiction. There will handouts and exercises relating to the concepts discussed.
Colin Lucre has been a filmmaker, drama teacher and creative writing teacher for three decades. His three volumes of children’s plays have been published internationally. His current project is a manuscript for writing novels, novellas and short stories.
